House of Commons Culture, Media & Sport Committee Inquiry into the Governance of English Football

In the Spring of 2011 the House of Commons Culture, Media & Sport Committee conducted an inquiry into the governance of the English football industry.

The Birkbeck Sport Business Centre (BSBC) submitted written evidence to the inquiry. Sean Hamil took part in the first oral hearing a recording of which is available on the Culture, Media & Sport Committee website. Aspects of Sean Hamil’s evidence were subsequently referenced in coverage of the Committee hearing in The Guardian and The Telegraph newspapers.

The final report was published on Friday 29th July 2011 and will be of interest to anyone researching the governance of sport in the UK. The BSBC subsequently organised a public debate on the subject of the final report’s findings which was addressed by Committee members Damian Collins MP and Therese Coffey MP, AFC Wimbledon Chief Executive Erik Samuelson, and Danny Davis from the Mishcon Da Reya legal firm who is an expert in insolvency law.

In October 2011 the UK government responded directly to the Committee report’s recommendations. The Minister for Sport, Hugh Robertson MP, summarised the government’s response in an interview with the BBC.
