Universidad Autónoma de Madrid – guest lecture on sport policy in the UK: Birkbeck Sport Business Centre’s Geoff Walters

On April 25th 2014 Dr Geoff Walters was in Madrid presenting to students at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid through the European Union Erasmus teaching exchange agreement. The Universidad Autónoma de Madrid is one of the top universities in Spain and was ranked in 52nd place for universities under 50 years old in the Times Higher Education rankings in 2013. Geoff gave a presentation on the historical development of sport policy in the UK to 40 undergraduate students. The presentation allowed for a comparative perspective with sport policy in Spain as part of a module sport policy, taught by Dr Juan Luis Paramio Salcines, a senior lecturer in sport management at the university. Dr Paramio Salcines is a leading expert on accessibility in regard to sport stadia and presented his research at Birkbeck in October. He has also recently collaborated with Geoff as a co-editor on the Routledge Handbook for Corporate Social Responsibility in Sport. This Erasmus exchange was one of a number that the academic members of the Birkbeck Sport Business Centre are involved in, with the aim to build international links with sport business research groups in universities across Europe.
