Economia Discussion – The Roots of the “Crisis” in Sport Governance

Birkbeck Sport Business Centre’s Sean Hamil was one of a number of experts and sport industry professionals interviewed for an article in Economia, the member publication for ICAEW chartered accountants, on the subject to the current crisis in sport governance.

The article discussed the roots of the crisis at international sport organisation such as FIFA. Sean Hamil explained how the very success of international sport, through its ability from the 1990′ s onwards to generate significant revenue streams, had created instability in sport federations as their governance structures had been designed to manage high levels of participatory sport and competition organsation, but were ill-prepared for managing significant financial operations. However, he argued that there were signs that the sport federations could adapt and evolve effective governance structures where proper leadership was installed, and cited the work of UK Sport in driving improved governance structures in UK Olympic sports as a positive example of how this could be achieved..
