This roundtable debate, and related networking event, is organised by the alumni associations of the Birkbeck College, University of London, sport management programmes, and the alumni association of the football industries and horse-racing MBA programmes at the University of Liverpool.
The future of elite men’s football in Europe at the moment is full of uncertainties. Many believe that domestic broadcasting markets are unlikely to grow at the rates seen in the last two decades, and that non-European markets are also becoming saturated. Several reports have pointed out that the ways in which younger generations consume sport are changing, with many fewer fans watching entire matches on TV. OTT streaming and TV piracy are on the increase. There is debate over the structure of competitions, and the way in which a small number of elite clubs in a few countries have gained at the expense of those lower down the pyramid. Agents continue to take significant amounts of money out of the sport, while football’s dependence on alcohol and gambling companies has been subject to growing criticism. These issues — and others — will form subjects for discussion by an expert panel, which will include Phil Carling (Director of Global Football, Octagon), Mike Wragg (Vice-President for Global Research, Nielsen Sport), and David Conn (The Guardian).
This is an event jointly organised by the MSc Sports Business graduates of Birkbeck, University of London, and graduates of the MBA (Football Industries) at the University of Liverpool). The event is free but prior registration is essential. The panel discussion will take place in the first part of the evening, leaving time for drinks, nibbles, and networking afterwards.
