‘Getting on with the Game’

Given by:

Martin Atkinson, Premier League Referee

In 2008 the Premier League launched the ‘Get on with the Game’ initiative in which Premier League Chairmen, managers and players all signed up to charters that outline acceptable standards of behaviour. The relationship between players and the referee is an important aspect of this initiative. In this semi-nar Martin Atkinson, a Premier League and FIFA listed referee, will discuss a range of issues including:

  • A background to refereeing in the Premier League – match selection; fitness; the role of the fourth official
  • Player management – are players ‘getting on with the game’?
  • The role and relationship with the media
  • Differences between refereeing in the UK and Europe
  • The importance of referee integrity to maintain the integrity of the league

The seminar will be followed by a question and answer session with the audience.

Martin Atkinson is one of the country’s most experienced and well respected referees and has a reputation in the game for ex-cellent man-management. He has refereed top matches in the Premier League, UEFA Cup, and Champions League as well as FIFA Internationals and was recently promoted to UEFA’s Pre-mier group of referees. He refereed the FA Community Shield Final at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff in 2006 and is 4th official at this year’s FA Cup Final between Everton and Chelsea.
