“Developing Football in a Developing Nation: The case of Coritiba”

Given by:

Oliver Seitz, Head of International Affairs of Coritiba FC, Curitiba, Brazil

Coritiba Football Club is a members’ club and was first formed in 1909. It is considered one of the top flight football clubs in Brazil, winning many trophies throughout its history, such as the Brazilian League in 1985. Despite being the main club of Curitiba, one of the most developed cities in Brazil and Latin America, Coritiba has struggled to maintain a regular level of performance both on and off the pitch since the 1990’s, which culminated in spending two years on the Second Division in 2006 and 2007, which seriously endangered the relationship between the club and its supporters and created an enormous political turmoil. Having won a promotion for the 2008 First Division, Coritiba’s members elected a new board of directors in January 2008, which has adopted a business-like management approach by developing a strategic plan for the next 12 years, strengthening the club’s financial structure, giving more authority to the executive departments and hiring well qualified professionals.

Benefiting from an excellent generation of young players coming from its academy, Coritiba was in September 2008 placed on the top half of the Brazilian First Division, fighting for a place in the Copa Libertadores in 2009. Approaching its 100th anniversary, the club now faces the challenge of maintaining an on-pitch performance by strengthening its academy and generating income in the very unstable environment for football clubs in Brazil. In this presentation, Oliver Seitz will describe the Brazilian environment and how the local football industry is shaped by it, and present the strategies that Coritiba is adopting to become one of the main Latin American football clubs.
