Prior to his postgraduate studies, Phil pursued a career in branding and visual communications, working at integrated marketing agencies in Birmingham and Sydney before moving to London and setting up his own freelance creative consultancy. After graduating from Birkbeck with an award for academic excellence, he held teaching positions at the University of Winchester and UCFB Wembley, where he led the Football Business and Marketing programme. In 2018, he took up the role of Associate Lecturer in Sport Marketing at Birkbeck and continues to teach this subject across the institution’s range of sport management programmes.
Phil’s research interest is sport tourism. Having already undertaken an onsite investigation into the motivations of football tourists at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, his doctoral research focuses on mapping consumer journeys at the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship.
Away from Birkbeck, Phil is an aviation enthusiast and lifelong supporter of West Bromwich Albion FC.
