The Executive Master in Sport Governance (MESGO) is a unique programme designed for senior sports sector professionals wishing to master the complex dimensions and the diversity of professional sport at the international level. It offers a distinctive platform for training, social and professional contact, knowledge-sharing and personal development for sports’ organisations’ managerial and professional staff, and elected representatives.
The MESGO is a unique vocational programme, in which the key stakeholders of sport come together to analyse the characteristics of its specific model, consider the main challenges it faces and reflect on measures that could be put in place to ensure its future prosperity. It is designed to stimulate the analytical reflexes of decision-makers in sport; it invites them to analyse the governance of global sport at its most complex, and explore the diversity of international practice. The particular strength of the MESGO lies in its consideration of world sport from multiple angles. It incorporates economics, politics and law, draws comparisons between different sports and uses carefully selected examples from other sectors (private business, public sector, non-governmental organisations) to help participants develop appropriate responses to the important challenges they face.
It is designed for managers working, within an international orientation, in national, European, and international sporting institutions; from federations, clubs and leagues, public authorities, commercial partners, and all the stakeholders in the global sporting eco-system.
The programme is delivered exclusively in English. It is delivered in ten one-week blocs over an 18 month cycle. With the final bloc devoted to the oral defence of the professional thesis which each participant must submit as part of the programme assessment process, the other nine blocs address the following key topics in sport governance and management: the Context of International Sport – the institutional and economic operating environment; the Governance of Sports Organisations; Sport Competition Design and Regulation; the Legal Framework of Sport with particular reference to the role of European Union institutions; Strategic Marketing in Sport; the Organisation of Sport Events; Ethics in Sport; the North American Model of Sport; the Future of Sport Governance. The teaching faculty consists of leading academic experts in sport governance and management together with leading figures from the global sport management community.
The MESGO is organised by five European Universities/Research Centres (Birkbeck Sport Business Centre, Birkbeck College, University of London – England; Centre de Droit et d’Economie du Sport – University of Limoges, France; Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz –Germany; Institut Nacional d’Educacio Fisica de Catalunya and Lleida University – Barcelona, Spain; HEC Lausanne, University of Lausanne.
